6 Ways to Quickly Conquer Anxiety for Good
It’s Monday! I have to take the kids to the school. Dang, we’re out of lunch meat. What are my babies going to eat?! Jack can’t find clean socks. I can’t find my keys..Where did I put my keys? No, no, no the kids are going to be late for school. I am going to be late to work! I’m starting to panic! My heart is racing, that feeling in my gut is back. Welcome to another morning of my life...
If these types of situations happen to you, don’t worry! Here are 6 ways to conquer anxiety for good so you can feel like the BEST version of yourself every day.
When panic starts to creep in and you feel your heart racing, immediately bring your attention to your breath. Usually we give no thought whatsoever to breathing, it comes naturally. But breathing is the easiest and quickest way to push anxiety to the curb.
Here’s how to breathe to get instant control over your anxiety: Breathe slowly and deeply, in and out. Breathe with your diaphragm! Take a deep breath in through the nose, let your lower abdomen fill up first, then the middle abdomen and finish by the chest. As you breathe, follow your breath as it travels up your body. Your concentration is on your breathe and in the moment. Hold it for a couple of seconds in your chest and as you exhale, push out any stress, negative thoughts or worry. While you do your breathing exercises, visualize a happy place - a place that brings you joy. Whether it’s your home with your family, or some place in nature, visualizing it will help you to relax and let the stress melt away. After just a minute or two, your body physically feels lighter, happier, and more in control.
We feel anxious when we worry about something. Most of the time it’s something that hasn’t even happened yet! Stop and think about that for a second. We are worrying about something that hasn’t happened! We’ve created a false story in our heads about what might happen.
The next time you catch yourself worrying about something that hasn’t happened and may never happen, stop for a second and think it through. If it happens, is it really that bad? Is it the end of the world? No! Most of the time when we are panicking, we tend to dramatize and overestimate the situation. Look around you, you have your family, your kids, your friends, your job... Look at the beauty in your life! Let’s be realistic, most of our worries do not come true. So relax!
3. Face your Fear
Don’t avoid your fears, stretch your fear muscles! By taking baby steps to do things just outside your comfort zone, you’re proving to yourself that you CAN do it! You’re growing and conquering your fears - the fears that bring you anxiety! If you face them, you’re going to beat them and the fear will fade away as you push yourself just a little further day by day. It’s okay to be a little vulnerable in order to get used to the fear and conquer it for good. For example, if you are afraid of meeting new people, do it! Strike up a friendly conversation the next time you’re out and about. Maybe you like to sing (but only in the shower where it’s safe), gather up some friends, it’s time for a little karaoke.
Your rule should be, if you think you’ll enjoy doing something at the end but you are kind of scared, do it anyway! Do it because you’ll enjoy it. Don’t have regrets for the things you didn’t try.
4. Take some me-time
When you feel anxious, it’s your body telling you it needs some love and attention! Take some time to yourself. Eat a delicious meal, go for a walk, take a bath, read a book…Do something you love! If all else fails, watch videos of kittens or puppies on YouTube. Trust me, you’ll feel great! Most importantly, get enough sleep! If you don’t sleep well, the cycle doesn’t end. You are going to be more stressed and anxious. Get your Z’s in and wake up fearless!
Anxiety gets worse when overwhelm starts. Take control and do a little planning. Update your calendar, make a to-do list, do some meal planning. When you see it all written down, it’s on paper and out of your head. This helps you to feel more relaxed and in control.
6. Don’t be Perfect, be Badass.
You’re imperfectly badass! You won’t be able to control everything around you but you can control how you react. You are strong, you are a fierce woman who can conquer any obstacle, so don’t let anything (or anyone) mess with your mind.
Don’t forget to celebrate your little victories! Did you just rock the meeting you were scared about? Did you check your anxiety at the door before walking into that room full of people you didn’t know? Great! Acknowledge that you DID IT! You stretched your fear muscle. You showed anxiety who’s boss. That deserves some credit!
